English-Language Arts and Writing

 Course Identification

*Course: English I, English II, English III, and English IV.

*Grade Level: 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th

*Duration: One year

*Value: Ten credits for each year

 Course Description: 

            As participating members of a democratic society, young men and women must know how to cope with the complexities of the modern world and use proper reason, evidence, and judgment. They must be able to act with responsibility, and respect the rights of others. Each person must have a well-developed value system and be willing to act upon it, either independently or as a member of a group. This course will help young people develop stronger communication skills. It will give them an opportunity to practice skills needed for the world of work, and it will hopefully guide them toward a successful future.

            An interdisciplinary approach (drawing from different subject matter) will be used when providing English-Language Art instruction. The four courses will emphasize the critical study of the human condition through films, novels, essays, and and non-fiction material. As required by the California Department of Education, Focus will be placed on the following domains: Reading, Writing, and Oral English-Language Conventions, Listening and Speaking. Class discussions, small group activities, reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and listening excersizes will be used to help students gain knowledge and understanding of  English-Language Arts and themselves.

 Requirements:

            All students must complete the following to pass this class:

            *First and Second Semester:  Take and keep in-class notes for every class meeting (Must use Cornell note  

              taking method and must write a "Paragraph Summary Statement" at the end of each class meeting.

            *Second Semester: One 4 to 6 page (1500 to 1800 word) "Philosophy of Life" paper (Seniors only).

            *First and Second Semester: 25 to 35 "Tell A Story" (power writing) stories/reflective essays.

            *Second Semester: One professional resume. (for Juniors and Seniors only)

            *First and Second Semester: A "Portfolio Notebook"of in-class note taking, handouts, and all homework  

             activities.  Must include a "table of contents" page.

            *First and Second Semester: Write one letter to a public official.

            *First and Second Semester:  Complete two job applications during each semester. (All students) 

 
Note: Passing grade for this class is 66% or better!

Materials

            *Required books—Literature & the Language Arts: The EMC Masterpiece Series texts and Novels

            *One blue or black ink pen, 2 pencils, and loose leaf binder paper.

            *Three-ring binder and spiral note book.

Note: Please bring all materials to each class meeting.

 Grading:

            *Writing and Test =35%

            *Portfolio Notebook (collection of assignments/handouts) = 20%

            *Participation and Classroom Practices = 20%

            *Quizzes and Exercises = 25%

 

100 to 90 = C+ 

89 to 84 = C 

83 to 78 = C- 

77 to 72 = D+

71 to 66 = D

65 and below = F 

Note:  In order for students to earn an "A" or "B" in any of the English-Language Arts courses,  he/she must write a 800 to 1200 essay for the quarter in progress.  The essay must meet the
requirements set by the California English-Language Arts Content 
 
Standards and must follow the MLA standard for writing research 
 
papers.

Visual and Performing Arts 

 Course Identification:

*Course: Arts and Culture

*Grade Level: 9th through 12th

*Duration: One Year

*Value: Ten Credits

Course Description: 

         “Arts and Culture” is a Visual Arts course about how people across the ages and around the world have used or are using art to express their human condition: as political experience, religious expression, and as personal expression.

         This year’s Arts and Culture course will focus on the basic principles, elements, and common vocabulary of the visual arts. Through exercises and studies, students will be coached on how to use the basic principles and elements of art to create their own visual art. Furthermore, students will study and analyze the works of recognized artists and will have opportunities to apply the techniques used by them. Also, students will be encouraged to explore and develop their own ideas and styles.

         As outlined by California Visual and Performing Arts Framework, students will developing awareness for the following five dimensions of understanding:

         *Artistic Perception—perception and description of the visual,

*Creative Expression—the doing/skills acquisition and practice

*Arts Heritage—historical and cultural background of art and artists,

*Connection, Relations, and Application—connecting what is learned with the beginning of life, other classes, and career options.

Requirements:

         All students must complete the following to Pass this class:

          *A notebook (portfolio) of all written work,

         *A passing grade—C or better—on all tests,

         *Completion of all studio work—C or better.

 

Note: Passing grade for this class is 65% or better
